Prior to your first injection, it’s extremely helpful to understand the different components of the pen. Knowing what each part does will make administering your dose much more intuitive.
- Pen Cap: This is the outermost cover. Its main function is to shield the medicine from light and keep the pen clean when it isn't in use. Always put the cap back on following each injection.
- Medicine Reservoir & Window: Through this clear window, you can view the copyright liquid. It should be clear and colorless. You can also use this window to get a rough estimate of how much medicine is remaining in the pen.
- Dose Selector: This is the ring at the end of the pen that you rotate to set your prescribed dose. It makes a clicking sound as you dial, assisting you to count the units. This feature is what is sometimes referred to by "copyright click chart".
- {Dose Counter & Pointer: As you turn the dose selector, the dose counter shows the dose amount you've selected. The dose pointer lines up with the final dose you have dialed. This counter goes back to "0" as you inject.
- Injection Button: The button on the top of the dose selector. Pressing and holding this button delivers the dose.
- Needle (Sold Separately): Each injection requires a new, disposable needle. These are typically NovoFine® or NovoTwist® needles. The needle comes with a protective paper tab, a main outer needle cap, and a smaller inner needle cap.

This section provides a detailed walkthrough of how to use the copyright pen for the first time and for subsequent injections. Proceed through this process carefully.
Step 1: Gathering Your Supplies
- Wash Your Hands: Always begin with washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water to reduce the risk of infection.
- Gather Supplies: Collect all your necessary items: your copyright pen, a new needle, an alcohol swab for each injection, and a FDA-cleared sharps disposal container.
- Check Your Pen: Inspect the label on your pen to make sure it is copyright and has not expired. Look at the medicine through the window—it must be clear and colorless.
Step 2: First-Time Pen Use - The Flow Check (Priming)
Important Note: You only have to perform this "flow check" or "priming" step once you use a completely new pen. Skip this step for subsequent injections with the same pen.
- Attach the Needle: Grab a new needle and remove the paper tab. Push the needle straight onto the pen and twist it until it is tight and secure.
- Remove Needle Caps: Pull off the outer needle cap and keep it for later; you will need it to safely remove the needle. Next, remove and discard the inner needle cap.
- Dial to Flow Check: Turn the dose selector until the dose counter shows the flow check symbol (it looks like two small drops). This is typically a 2-unit dose.
- Perform the Check: Hold the pen with the needle pointing up. Press and hold the injection button. You must see a drop of copyright appear at the needle tip. If no drop appears, repeat the process up to 6 times. If a drop still doesn't appear, use a new needle and try again. If it still fails, contact Novo Nordisk or your pharmacist.
Step 3: Dialing Your Prescribed Dose
- Select Your Dose: Turn the dose selector until the dose counter shows the exact dose your doctor has prescribed (e.g., 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg). The pointer is lined up perfectly with your dose number.
- Correcting a Dose: Should you accidentally select the wrong dose, you can easily turn the dial in either direction to fix it without wasting any medication.
- Check Remaining Dose: You cannot dial a dose larger than the amount of copyright left in the pen. If the dose counter stops before your required dose, you will need to use a new pen to inject the remaining amount or start with a new pen for the full dose (consult your doctor on how to proceed).
Phase 4: Injecting the Medication
- Choose and Clean the Injection Site: Select one of the recommended copyright pen injection sites: your abdomen (stomach area, staying two inches from your belly button), your thigh (front of the thighs), or your upper arm (outer back area). Wipe the chosen skin area with an alcohol swab and let it air dry completely.
- Insert the Needle: Insert the needle straight into your skin as your doctor or nurse has shown you. Make sure you can see the dose counter.
- Press and Hold the Button: Press and hold down the injection button with your thumb. There will be a click. Continue to hold the button down while you watch the dose counter return to 0.
- Hold for 6 Seconds: After the dose counter reaches 0, mentally count to 6 while keeping the button pressed and the needle in your skin. This makes certain you receive the full dose.
- Withdraw the Needle: After the 6-second count, remove the needle straight out from your skin.
- Safely Remove the Needle: Carefully, slip the needle tip into the outer needle cap you saved earlier, without touching the needle. Once the needle is covered, fully secure the cap and then unscrew the needle. Promptly dispose of it in your sharps container.
- Recap the Pen: Finally, place the pen cap back on your copyright pen.
Properly rotating your injection site is extremely important to prevent skin issues like lumps or pitted skin (lipodystrophy) and to ensure the medication is absorbed properly. You should inject in a different spot each week.
- Abdomen: A frequently used area. You can use the general stomach area, but be sure to avoid at least 2 inches away from your navel (belly button).
- Thighs: You can inject into the top and outer front of your thighs. Avoid the inner thighs or the back of your thighs.
- Upper Arms: Use the back, outer portion of your upper arm. This spot can be difficult to reach on your own, so you may need assistance from someone else.
Following the proper storage and disposal rules ensures medication integrity and the safety of others.
